Florence, Italy
I took the high-speed train ride from Rome to Florence, and on the journey I saw vineyards and sheep pastures on rolling hills throughout the countryside. Ciao Florence.
Florence is truly a medieval city and quite beautiful. I stayed at a villa that’s been in the family for 500 years. The villa has the largest privately-owned garden in any city in Europe. With my passion for gardening, how could I not stay there?
On my first full day there, I had the truffle ravioli at Zeb, a tiny restaurant with maybe five tables. I chose to sit at the bar and sat next to Ahmed who is from Dubai. Ahmed designs all the government uniforms for the UAE. According to Ahmed, "The story of Florence is behind all the gates." I agree. After I three-hour lunch, I walked along the river Arno and people watched. I find staying on the other side of the river across from the city center gives a more authentic experience and like Rome, it was the same in Florence.
The next day, I took a hike that the villa staff recommended for the best views of Florence. Of course it was all uphill. But the rewarding views was worth it.
Tip for Roaming
In large European cities, if you prefer to be away from the tourist hustle and bustle, stay across the river, away from the city center - that's usually where the locals live and you can get a more authentic experience.
Later than afternoon, I visited the world famous leather market and succumbed to the pleasure of
purchasing several leather bags. Honestly the crowds at the Duomo, on the Ponte Vecchio and at the Uffizi Gallery were overwhelming for me. But these works of art and places cannot be missed. I found the Medici Riccardi Palace less crowded and easier to navigate. I found myself enjoying the peace and calm of the neighborhoods away from the city center of this popular city.
