Johannesburg, South Africa
Gritty, urban and home to the Apartheid museum, Jo'burg has a vibe unlike any I'd ever experience to date. The Soweto Township is where you can find Vilakazi Street - the only street that has the homes of two Noble Peace Prize winners: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
If you have any interest in history and want to understand the oppressive system that Black and Colored South Africans had to endure for many years, then The Apartheid Museum cannot be missed. I spent three hours there and was reluctant to leave.
In Joburg, I stayed at Pablo’s House, a gorgeous 8-room “treehouse” lodge in Melville, an artsy suburb outside of the city center. The staff, service and decor of this boutique accommodation was outstanding. I found the people of Jo'burg to be gracious and kind.
