How to Squeeze in a Weekend in Lisbon

Updated: Dec 28, 2022

Lisbon, Portugal

On the way home from London, I spent the weekend in Lisbon on a stopover via TAP Air Portugal. Stopovers are offered by the national airline of a country. There's no list of airlines that offer Stopovers, always check as you book your travel. In addition to TAP, here are a few airlines and their Stopover city: China Air (Bejing), Eithad Airways (Abu Dhabi), EmiratesAirways (Dubai), Icelandair (Reykjavik), KLM (Amsterdam), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Qatar Airways (Doha).

A stopover is a perfect way to get a taste of a location, usually with no extra cost in airfare and sometimes accommodations are included - depends on the airline. I had heard so much about this city and I really wanted to check it out, if only for a few days. Lisbon is the second oldest city in Europe, only Athens has been around longer. The city was ruled by the Moors from the 8th century to the 12th century. I stayed at a B&B that is owned by the family who were the king’s bakers. The city is known for its tiled buildings, influenced by Islamic artisans; great food, mild winters and amazing wine-- trust me on the wine. I took a food tour and met some women who I hung out with during my time there. They had been in town much longer than I had so I took advantage of their knowledge and followed their lead.

Check out my post on living in Portugal for a month.

Tip for Roaming

TAP is one of the airlines that allow passengers to do an extended layover - up to five days in Lisbon or Porto. I highly recommend booking air travel with an airline that offers stopovers as a way to visit another country while on your way to your ultimate destination.
