For female solo travelers, safety is one of the biggest concerns when taking a trip, and based on what I’ve seen and heard, it's a key reason why many women are afraid to travel solo. Although there are more details to be aware of when traveling internationally, common sense is the best safety precautions that can be taken. Nevertheless, here are 10 safety tips to keep in mind as you explore the world:
Research your destination: Before you leave, do your research about the place you're visiting. Find out about the local customs, laws, and any safety concerns you should be aware of. If you are a U.S. resident, you can register with the State Department’s SMART Traveler program, STEP , to be alerted about potentially unsafe situations before and while traveling in a particular country. I was in South Africa when the pandemic was declared and I learned about it through a STEP email alert. I never leave home without registering with STEP.
Get the best quality accommodations that you can afford - quality doesn’t necessarily mean expensive: Choose a reputable hotel or accommodation that is located in a safe area. Make sure the accommodations have good security measures, such as 24-hour front desk service, no external
entry, and has secure locks on doors windows.
Keep your valuables safe: Keep your passport, cash, and other valuables in a secure location, such as a hotel safe or hidden in your luggage. Don't carry all your money and documents in one place. Make several copies of your passport and carry a copy with you on excursions, day trips, etc. Use a money belt with RFID protection that has enough space to carry credit cards, passport as well as cash. RFID prevents someone from cloning your cards.
Sit at the restaurant bar for meals, especially dinner - you are not as conspicuous as eating alone at a table. Watch alcohol intake - you are more vulnerable when alcohol consumption is involved.
Learn a couple of phrases in the local language and/or download the Google Translate app with the local language to your phone. Be sure to download for off-line use.
Stay connected: Keep in touch with family or friends at home and let them know where you're going and when you plan to return. Consider investing in a portable Wi-Fi hotspot or local SIM card to stay connected. WhatsApp is used widely in most countries. It's a good idea to download the app before leaving on the trip and ask key family members to download as well.
Be aware of local customs for dress and avoid wearing flashy jewelry or expensive clothing that might attract unwanted attention. What may be acceptable at home could be offensive in another country.
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don't walk alone at night, avoid quiet or deserted areas, and be cautious when accepting offers of help from strangers. Avoid giving out personal information. Come up with a phrase for when people ask you if you are traveling by yourself. It maybe an innocent question, but it’s better to indicate that you are not solo. Ex: “No, I’m meeting my friend in 20 mins” or “No, my partner is getting ready/is sleeping, etc.”
Use reputable transportation option such as licensed taxis or ride-shares like UBER, and avoid accepting rides from strangers. Have the name and address of your accommodation in the local language so you can share it with taxis or ride-shares.
Trust your instincts: if something doesn't feel right, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Your safety is paramount.
NOTE: Pepper spray and firearms are considered illegal in many countries. Be aware of the laws regarding these "safety measures" when traveling.
